During the fall of 2021 I had a priviledge of working on an Oscar winning short(ish) film “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse” as a background artist. I contributed over 20 paintings, most of them covering river sequence but I also painted a few backgrounds for the storm sequence.
It was an exceptional experience for me for multiple reasons.
First, it’s very uncommon for background paintings to be used pretty much as-is in the final film. Usually, there’s a lot of post processing involved. Here, paintings are the backgrounds.
Second, it was a huge team of high level professionals and very very friendly environment. I learnt A LOT in the process but probably I learnt most from our art direction Mike McCain.
And finally - it won an Oscar so very much worth the effort in the end ;).
